“She really wanted a pink unicorn room. It’s perfect!” Transforming the lives of a family in North London

The Childhood Trust’s community outreach programme, Transforming Spaces, has helped change the lives of a small family living in North London by redecorating the bedroom of a four-year-old girl.

The family was referred to The Childhood Trust by a local charity. After experiencing a series of temporary placements, they had been moved into a permanent, but empty, place to finally call home.

Following a visit to meet the family, two essentials for the room were clear; the colour pink and unicorns. Our team set to work with the design, transforming a “white, empty and boring” bedroom into somewhere Nina* felt was a space created just for her. The transformation included a new bed, wardrobe and desk, giving Nina a place to sleep, play and explore her creativity.

Our latest research on furniture poverty, Housed but Not Homed highlights the importance of a child’s bedroom and the impact of their environment on development and wellbeing. Transforming Spaces has an immediate impact on children and the wider family, often relieving some of the anxiety associated with inadequate housing conditions and providing financial relief for families juggling the need for food, bills and essential furniture.
