Josephine was invited to speak about our work to alleviate the impact of child poverty and improve the life chances of disadvantaged children in the capital.
The need for our work has never been greater. According to the recent Poverty Strategy Commission’s report, London has the highest relative child poverty rate in England at 36%. In some inner-city boroughs, the rate is as high 47%.
Every day we see children and families living without a nutritious diet, unable to participate in leisure and recreational activities, and living in homes with a minimum standard of basic amenities such as furniture, hot running water and heating. All children should live free from the stress and uncertainty caused by not having enough household income to achieve these things.
