How AI Toys Shape Young Minds

How AI Toys Shape Young Minds

A first-of-its-kind UK study in collaboration with the University of Cambridge.

Artificial Intelligence is already changing how children play and learn. While AI-powered toys offer exciting possibilities, they also pose unknown risks to early childhood development—especially for those already facing digital exclusion.

"We still know very little about how children interact with this technology. We are particularly interested in understanding how AI toys may be widening existing inequalities and if they can be harnessed to bridge the opportunity gap."
Dr Emily Goodacre – Developmental Psychologist

Why This Research Matters

At The Childhood Trust, we know that technology poverty can deepen existing inequalities. This study investigates:

  • Emotional Bonds: How children form relationships with conversational, AI-powered toys.
  • Mental Health: The impact of these interactions on a child’s wellbeing and self-regulation.
  • Access & Regulation: Whether existing policies protect vulnerable children and if caregivers feel equipped to navigate these risks.
