Our Community Outreach

Transforming Spaces is The Childhood Trust’s community outreach programme, dedicated to creating safe, inspiring environments for children living in poverty. Every week, we transform bedrooms and community centres that children depend on for safety, support, and a sense of belonging. Our goal is simple: to give every child a space where they can sleep peacefully, play freely, learn confidently, and grow.

Each project is thoughtfully designed by our team and brought to life in just one day by a team of dedicated corporate volunteers. Learn more about the vision behind our programme in our Volunteering Strategy.

How it works

Each bedroom refurbishment project includes:

  • Painting and decorating: We brighten up the space with fresh coats of paint, chosen in consultation with the family and child to reflect their preferences and personalities.
  • New furniture: Every child receives brand-new furniture which could include a bed, mattress, wardrobe, desk, and chair as well as storage to help keep spaces clean and tidy.
  • Finishing touches: The bedrooms are completed with soft new bedding, curtains or blinds, and other unique touches to make the space feel special and personal.

All furnishings are carefully sourced and funded by the programme. Everything is delivered directly to the family’s home ahead of the installation day to ensure a smooth and efficient transformation

"The children were absolutely ecstatic with the results! They could not wait to get into their beds and play with their toys in their rooms. Your support has helped make mum's life whole again."

Support Worker (Referral Partner)

Referrals Are Open

We are currently accepting referrals from those supporting families based in all London boroughs. While we welcome referrals from all areas, we are particularly interested in applications from Hackney, Camden, and Tower Hamlets. Referrals can be submitted by support workers, social workers, schools, and charities who are already working closely with a family.

To submit a referral, we ask that all referral partners consent to support the family through this process. This includes attending a site visit with a member of our team to meet the family and ensuring we can collect monitoring and evaluation information before and after the project is completed.

Please ensure you read our FAQ document  before completing the referral form linked below. If you have any questions, you can get in touch with the Delivery Team at programmesupport@childhoodtrust.org.uk. Please note, due to the high volume of referrals, there may be a delay in our response

Get involved

The Transforming Spaces programme's volunteering opportunities are reserved exclusively for our corporate partners - companies that make financial contributions to our core work.

  • Corporate groups will spend the volunteer day painting, carrying out small repairs, and assembling flat pack furniture to give a child’s bedroom or a local youth centre a full makeover.
  • Redecoration projects are completed by the volunteers in one day (9.30am - 5.30pm).
  • Redecoration projects can accommodate groups of 6 - 12 volunteers.

The Childhood Trust thanks the B&Q Foundation for generously supporting this programme.

We also thank Katharine Pooley, our pro bono interior design partners, for supporting and helping us design multiple bedrooms each year.
